9 years is a rapist getting jailed and released twice in a row.

9 years is what it takes for a human to grow from a screaming pile of blubber and cartillage, into a physically fully independent person with an actual life to talk of.

9 years is longer than a two-term US presidency or German chancellorship

9 years is Gilad Shalit, almost twice

9 years is almost halfway into a murder sentence in Germany

9 years is 3/4 of Hitler's reign and countless dead

9 years is what it takes to change from a dumb teen, to a mother of several kids

9 years is how long my dog was on a chain, producing puppies and being emotionally and physically neglected, and her personality shows no trace of that.

As for some of the facts, they are locally valid.

My Estee has spent 9 years chained up in a backyard, forced to make puppies that were probably treated as poorly as she was, sold to thoughtless morons who wanted a quick and cheap purebreed dog.
When the shelter got her, she was dangerously obese, to be approached with caution and full of distrust.
The non-kill shelter had her for a year and treated her well. She became healthy again, and learned to trust people once more.
She was never potty-trained but never pees inside.
She was never taught to walk on a leash, but she never pulls.
She was never socialized with kids, animals and other encounters, but everybody can touch her.
She could never trust to be part of the pack the next day, but she can stay alone without trouble.
She was never raised in a house or taught any manners, but she doesn't steal, scratch, rip, chew or otherwise touch anything.
And no one ever played with her, but she has those cute moments when she shows off her play moves to me.

:bulletpink:Spay and neuter your pet.
:bulletpurple:Do not buy cats and dogs in pet shops. They come from horrible places you do not want to encourage.
:bulletpink:Do not buy from a puppy mill, a designer dog breeder, a rogue (not FCI-registered) breeder, a breeder producing lots of offspring, or other breeders whose desire to contribute to the quality of a breed seems to rank low on their list of priorities.
:bulletpurple:If you haven't set your mind on a specific breed/specimen, try to adopt or rescue.
All of these points are also valid for cats.

Nine years is a long time for a dog to be in that situation, with an unbalanced state of mind. And one year is no surprise to me for how long she recovered. Both you and your dog are very fortunate to have met each other.
And congratulations. :D

Once, my grandma found an old ragged flour bag next to a river. She was about to toss it away when she noticed the weight and a silent meowing from the inside... somebody dropped four young kitties away.
We took them and managed to save them all, even if some of them were dangerously underweight. I can't understand how some people treat animals like lower beings or THINGS...

Getting a cat in a bag can be very rewarding  It's wonderful you took care of them! I can't say I love my breeder/pet shop cats more for where they're from, than I love my trash and street cats, they're just ALL adorable :) Especially a hand-raised kitten that will see you as his mommy and run to you when something scared him. These were 2 trash kittens : [link] Though sadly one of them didn't make it :(

That really is sad... I didn't see them in ages anymore. My grandma lives in turkey, but she gave them away to a farmer where they are chasing mice and insects, as far as I know. :P
A guy I once met, a very awesome person is a member of an animal rights organisation... he told me stories that gave me a hard time to sleep. What you're doing is awesome and when I have the chance, I'll join in. :)

D'awh. She seems like she's such a sweetie. :)
My dog was basically rescued I guess you can say. The owner caught his Beagle and a Boxer in the act and didn't want the puppies. He gave them out when they were around four weeks old. Too young to be away from it's mother. Now she's a healthy, full-grown Boggle(?) that still thinks she's the size of a small pup. lol.

Ah you gotta love those idiots who don't neuter/spay their animals and then complain about them breeding, and of course the offspring gets given away too early, drowned or thrown against a wall. It's such a small investment to just prevent it altogether...

Indeed. :c And when the commercials for the ASPCA come on Animal Planet, I can not stand seeing those animals in great pain.
